The Visitor Experience

Manea ‘Footprints of Kupe’ is an interactive Cultural, Heritage, Tourism and Education Centre in Opononi, Hokianga located on Northland’s West Coast, also known as the Kauri Coast. The West Coast of Northland is referred to as the cradle of Māori nationhood. This is where Kupe (NZ’s first discoverer) called his home for 40 years.

Due to open in late 2020 it will preserve, communicate and celebrate Kupe’s voyage to Hokianga, his journeys across Aotearoa, his departure, the stories of repopulation and the progression of his descendants. As well as showcasing Hokianga’s special connection to that first discoverer, it will also be a catalyst for promoting the local culture, places of historical significance and the many activities that visitors can experience while they are in the area.

Manea is the first footprint of Kupe, based on over 1,000 years of local Māori history and is the story of the human habitation of Aotearoa. The visitor experience weaves an interactive 40 minute guided tour led by descendants of Kupe with authentic cultural engagement including protocols, storytelling, waiata (song) and karakia (prayers) and culminates in an official powhiri (welcome ceremony) and a 4D theatre performance and movie bringing to life his epic journey to Aotearoa, his departure to the homeland and the dramatic return voyages of his descendants. Enjoy a self-guided tour of the Footprints Gallery technology information stations that enable visitors to connect deeper with the area and stories.

The story of Kupe is one of national significance for it is New Zealand’s first story. Unfortunately, there are few, if any, significant icons that honour his deeds and/or opportunities for our manuhiri (visitors) to connect with this story. Manea will help to celebrate our ‘sense of place’, past, present and future and ensure that the stories of our tipuna (ancestors) are shared and remembered by locals and visitors. We look forward to connecting you with ‘the story that started it all’.
